Mayor’s Award for Service to the Community 2022
GCC is thrilled to hear the news that we are to be granted the prestigious Mayor of Guildford’s Award for Service to the Community for 2022.
Mayor of Guildford, Councillor Marsha Moseley, said these awards are for those “who have made an outstanding contribution to life in Guildford….an individual or organisation that has improved the lives of others, fostered good relationships and encouraged positive community spirit. These awards provide a real opportunity for those who have gone the extra mile to be celebrated by the community they serve.”
GCC has been at the forefront of music-making in Guildford since it was founded in 1980. As well as gaining an enviable reputation for performing choral music of the highest quality, the choir has also raised more than £28,000 over the years for local charities. The exciting news of this special award comes just after our recent Israel in Egypt performance, where our chosen charity, a local branch of Parkinson’s UK, raised a total of £508 from their retiring collection.
The award will be presented to Guildford Chamber Choir at a civic ceremony at the end of April.
What we do:
♦ We perform a wide range of music from the choral repertoire, both well known and less familiar, usually 3 concerts each year all of which raise money for local charities.
♦ We sing by invitation at Cathedrals when the regular choir takes a break. These have included Guildford, Southwark, Salisbury, Chichester, Portsmouth, Winchester and, most recently, Westminster Abbey.
♦ We organize workshop days which are open to all, often exploring a particular theme or genre in the choral repertoire.
♦ We tour abroad, combining singing, sightseeing and fun. France, Spain, Portugal, Hungary, Poland, Germany and Italy are amongst the countries visited. A tour to our twinned town, Freiburg, planned for October 2020, will take place at some future date.
